The AI doomsday push

Through September and early October 2026, outlet after outlet ran a story about artificial intelligence as a danger to humanity itself — a company boss calling for a slowdown, a government rejecting a kill switch, a king warning of existential danger, a researcher putting a number on human extinction. The stories are unconnected: different people, different countries, different weeks. What they share is a direction. This page collects them so the shape of the wave can be seen, which is exactly what reading them one at a time prevents. Collecting them is not a claim that the danger is imaginary. It is a claim that a great many newsrooms decided to run the same kind of story at the same time, and that is a fact about the press, separately checkable from any fact about AI.

How it spread

The bars are how many headlines ran each day. The line is how many different outlets had joined by then. When that line climbs a cliff, the press arrived together.

How much rests on nobody in particular

Headlines in this formation whose claim is attributed to officials or sources who are not named. This is the shape where an anonymous account enters as attributed, gets repeated, and is being written as settled fact a day later.

1 of 194 = 0.5%

Read the denominator before the number. This counts only the headline and whatever summary the feed supplies — a median of about 220 characters — so sourcing language that appears further down an article is invisible to it. A low percentage here means little of it was visible in the feed, not that the coverage is well sourced.

Institutes and official bodies in this

2 of these published before any newsroom did. That is the propagation claim worth testing: the framing existed upstream first.

Every headline, and why it counted

Nothing is in this formation without a stated reason you can check. Where the reason is a phrase, the phrase is quoted — open the headline and look for it.
